Liberia: 'Gross Political Deception'

A group under the banned, Campaigners Against the Re-Election of Unity Party, has cautioned Liberians not to be carried away by the UP gross political deception as it will prevent citizens from realizing their dream as it is the hope of a better tomorrow.

With the exception of Unity Party, CAREOUP is a conglomeration of different opposition political parties including: Coalition for Democratic Change, Liberty Party, United People's Party, Alternative National Congress, Movement for Economic Empowerment, All Liberian Party, Movement for Democracy Reconstruction, Movement for Progressive Change, among others.

Addressing a news conference on Wednesday in Doe community on the Bushrod Island, the group chairman Abraham Kanneh affirmed that the Unity Party led-government does not represent an example of social harmony given the dichotomy which has characterized the Liberian society under the watchful supervision of the current government.

"We have seen the development of ethnic strife, elitism, family divisions and hostilities," the group chairman added. Kanneh cited that the legacy of the vice president is one of the economic mismanagement and decline, singing of bogus concession agreements, lawlessness, violence, massive corruption, political repression and social discord.

According to him, he bewailed that it is time Liberians elect a new regime that will change the poor living conditions of the underpaid civil servants and other important groups of the population who are the direct victims of bad concessional practices, corruption and elitism of the Unity Party presidency.

Kanneh maintained that government is dangling in confidence crisis and accountability discrepancy, thus making the future of the younger generation dark and hopeless, adding that since 2008 the vice president cannot give any proper justification of the US$30,000,000 received from the Libyan government to grow rice in Liberia particularly in his home district Foya in Lofa County.

The group chairman indicated that it was due to a compromising endorsement that Liberians gave legitimacy to the regime of Unity Party that came to power through a controversial political maneuvering in 2005 and 2011.

"The Liberian people did so because they thought that the vice president who bears the mark of the native people would represent and seek to achieve the aspirations of the majority of the Liberian society, characterized by equality and equity, responsibilities and responsiveness, and honesty, and to as well give the ruling party chance to prove its quest for the presidency," he added.

He outlined unemployment, underdevelopment, precarious living condition, extreme poverty, inadequate schools, infant mortality, juvenile delinquency and a depleted capital slack as common conditions citizens are faced with under the vice presidency of Boakai.

"Our culture and traditional way of life inherited is being threatened by wanton environment degradation. Any attempts to address these grave economic shortcomings have been consistently spurned over yesteryears by a government lacking the political will to reform, as a result, the country is bankrupt, civil servants and police officers are grossly underpaid, irregularly paid or not paid at all, and teachers are disregarded and unable to receive the social services such as water which enhances the quality of life", the group chairman lamented.

"We want to let you know that our vision for societal transformation also depends on political decisions we make individually during democratic elections in our country. How will our community, district, county, and country at large improve or develop when we subscribe to the theory and practice called 'politics of the stomach', thinking about what we can benefit personally during elections and compromise the interest of the state for sugar coated unwarranted practices by political conservatives that tend to derail the progress of our society", he indicated.

He challenged every citizen to stand tall and rise to the occasion of campaigning against the UP, the period to finally divorce deception and falsehood is now. "Any unpatriotic educated vice-president is the most dangerous citizen of the country; we must end the longstanding marriage promise and pretense of the Unity Party regime," Kanneh said.
