South Africa: Police Commend the Media and Members of the Community On a Major Breakthrough Made

press release

The SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba and his management would like to convey words of appreciation to all the media houses and members of the community for their continuous support to the Police in this Province in the endeavour to fight crime.

This commendation by the Provincial Commissioner emanates from a major breakthrough which was made last night when a notorious and wanted suspect was handed over to the SAPS by his lawyer. Police launched a manhunt for the suspects and circulated his photograph with the assistance of various media houses. Lieutenant General Ledwaba has encouraged the media and members of the community to continue with their support to ensure that all the criminals are removed from our streets.

The SAPS Provincial Tracking Team have launched a massive manhunt for a highly wanted criminal on a series of crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, car hijacking and the possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, firearm and ammunition without a license.

Masilo Elias Gafane (31) who appeared before the Nebo Magistrate Court on the 2016-12-19, was released on R4 000- 00 bail by the local Magistrate Court.

The suspects and his co-suspects were terrorizing members of the communities in Letsitele outside Tzaneen, Jane Furse near Lebowakgomo, Westernburg near Polokwane and Lebowakgomo Policing areas between June 2015 and December 2016.

In the Letsitele Policing area, along Mavele and Xihoko road, the suspects shot and killed Musa Xiluwa of Runnymade village during a car hijacking where they robbed him of his Mercedes Benz sedan. Meanwhile in Jane Furse at Bopedi Spar Complex, they robbed a security officer of a firearm and cash. In Jane Furse, they were intercepted while they were en-route to go and commit a business robbery at the local meat market at Jane Furse plaza. They were arrested on 3 December 2016 at about 15:15 and an AK' 47 rifle, pistol and ammunition were recovered.

The Investigation Team were not satisfied about the release of this suspect and they referred the matter to the High Court for review of this bail. The High Court have ruled that he was not supposed to have been released and a warrant of arrest was then issued against this suspect to be taken back into custody. He will appear before Polokwane Magistrate Court soon.
