The apartment houses will be furnished with a swimming pool of Olympic standard, a shopping mall and offices including other modern facilities.
Government's real estate project to bring cities and towns up to acceptable standards has entered a high gear. In collaboration with local architects from Cabinet Bissek in Yaounde, President Paul Biya's vision for an emerging Cameroon is being transformed into reality as the construction of 1,050 modern apartment houses, dubbed Cité des cinquantenaires, is underway on the former Cité des douanes site at the Bonapriso neighbourhood in Douala. Experienced workers of the China Shanxi Construction Engineering [Group] Co. say they are determined to meet the 30 months deadline for the construction project to reach its logical finish. After its laying a solid concrete foundation for the modern storey buildings, walls are being mounted and other technical works are underway. Having started with geotechnical studies of the site on November 15, 2016 and later installation, technicians also carried out some excavation of the site for the construction to kick off as indeed it was months earlier. The 4000-metres square piece of land is receiving the beautiful Cité des cinquantenaires following start of Phase I of the project along the Njo-Njo Street in Bonapriso. The apartment houses will be furnished with a swimming pool of Olympic standard, a shopping mall and offices including other modern facilities. The constructed project is estimated at FCFA 24 billion. Move towards becoming an emerging nation appeals for modern social houses to facelift cities and towns as well as meet needs in cities like Douala and Yaounde, where the issue of housing arises more acutely. The general approach of authorities to this problem has been to come up with edifices more fascinating, comfortable and modern than existing affordable social houses. The project in Douala was launched by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Jean Claude Mbwentchou, May 27, 2016.
