Effective from Monday September 18, 2017, THISDAY Economic and Financial Intelligence Unit (TEFIU) in partnership with five leading stockbroking firms in the country will be flagging off a stock-market investment tracking index, called MODEL PORTFOLIOS. This would enable leading stockbrokers and investment bankers in the country share their trading skills and methodologies with ordinary investors. The investment houses involved in this project are Afrinvest Limited, Capital Assets Limited, FSDH, Lead Advisory Limited and Meristem Limited.
The project which began four months ago in the background involved asking five leading stock broking houses in the country to construct a portfolio of 10 stocks they can bet on in the next 12 months each using their best and well tested stock selection and investment strategies . They were then each given an imaginary N10m (ten million naira) to invest on the ten stocks in whatever proportions they considered best.
Fundamentally, too, we also asked each of the fund managers to clearly state the investment strategy on which they built the portfolio-for instance it could be for an investor with long term perspective; it could for a speculator; it could be for a child whose parents want to build portfolio that would grow with the child and so on.
Preliminary results turned in over the weekend show that all the investment houses without exception were able to increase initial amount invested (N10m) over a two-month period ( July 1st to August 31st) . The full reports for the two-month trial period will be published next Monday.
According to Ayo Arowolo, Editor-at Large, THISDAY Newspapers, 'the whole idea is to begin to generate interest from the general public on the stock market when they see how carefully constructed combination of stocks from experienced fund managers can still generate moderate and consistent returns".
All the representatives of the partner stock broking firms expressed optimism the project has the capacity to re-awaken the lost interest in the stock market through this collaborative efforts.
