Nigeria: Economic Downturn - Experts Suggest Ways for Youths Gainful Engagement

In Spite of the prevailing economic down-turn and odds against youth empowerment in Nigeria, with good investment ideas, discipline, focus and hard work, youths can be well off in the country.

This was the collective view of speakers, including corporate chieftains, government officials and religious leaders, who addressed youths at the 30th anniversary of Success Gate Christian Foundation, the Youth fellowship of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Surulere District, Lagos.

In her speech at the event, Mrs. Uzamat Folashayo Akinbile-Yusuf, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, said the topic was timely "in view of the ravaging impacts of high rate of unemployment and economic down-turn on our youths and the society at large."

Akinbile-Yusuf, who was represented by Mr. Rotimi Obaro, said that the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode led Lagos State Government will "continue to support and create an enabling environment for any organisation that its activities and programmes are geared towards developing the potentialities of youths in the state.

Speaking on theme of the programme: "Excelling Against All Odds; Christian Youth in Perspective," Otunba, Adetu, former managing director of Coca Cola, West Africa, and MD, East Africa Breweries, urged youths to launch out and stop dwelling on their disadvantages and limitations.

In spite of economic challenges, he said people are still making money genuinely in Nigeria. To tap into it, "you must sharpen your brains, shine your eyes, take advantage of technology like digital marketing to boost your business," he said. According to Special Apostle Oluseyi Coker, the Shepherd of the Youth Fellowship, the programme was part of activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fellowship with the theme: "The Church Without Wrinkle."
