Award-winning South African DJ Black Coffee shares on his latest projects and collaborations. Naming Rihanna as one of the artists he is currently creating for.
Internationally renowned South African DJ, Black Coffee or Nkosinathi Maphumulo is steadily increasing in demand with numerous A list musicians reaching out to work with him, among them Rihanna, Jay-Z, Usher, Akon and Diddy. The award winning hit-maker is however not new to these circles as he has previously worked with Alicia Keys and Drake.
Talking about his current notoriety to Metro FM, Black Coffee revealed that he is currently working on a song for Rihanna's upcoming album. He explained that Rihanna's team approached him while he was working with US Star Cassie but he had to turn down their initial pick as it was earmarked for the latter but promised them a new song that he is still working on. "It freaks me out. They are still waiting," he added.
In a different instance earlier in the year, friend and US producer Swizz Beatz approached him to work on a song for Jay Z's recent album, 4:44, but the potential collaboration fell through.
"Swizz reached out and said Jay is looking for one song before he concludes his album. It freaked me out. I am in Milan, I couldn't sleep. He literally called me: 'I spoke to Jay. Jay wants a song.' I couldn't sleep. Then I didn't work. I couldn't. How do you produce a song for Jay -Z? He kept saying: Ýo, man. I'm waiting'. I think I failed him but subconsciously I think I wanted to. I wasn't ready."
He further explained that his concern was that so many of the producers Jay-Z had used before would have a list of beats ready for Jay to pick from, whereas he prefers to craft the track with the artist.
"I don't work like that. I am like let's do a song. What tempo? I'm not one of those producer who goes to studio everyday and have a list of songs to play people," he said.
That aside, Black Coffee fans can look forward to a remix of an Usher track that he released a teaser for on his social media and Apple Beats 1 radio show.
Speaking to Phat Joe on East Coast Radio in March, Black Coffee revealed that he had also been working with Diddy on the star's next album.
"He fully understands what I do, but explained to me that 'I know what you do but this is not the reason I want you here. I don't want you for dance, I believe you can do something quite unique to this project'" he told Phat Joe.
Another exciting collaboration we know to expect from Black Coffee is a song with Akon that will be on the DJ's 2018 album:
