Nairobi — ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru will represent the Government in organizing funeral arrangements for Nyeri Governor, the late Dr Wahome Gakuru, alongside his relatives and other leaders.

The announcement was made by Deputy President William Ruto at Lee Funeral Home, shortly after viewing the body of Governor Gakuru, whose death he has termed as tragic and unfortunate.

The Deputy President has urged Kenyans to join his family and the Nyeri residents in prayers during the trying moments.

"It is unfortunate that in this accident we have lost the Governor of Nyeri... accidents have become progressively a leading cause of death in our country. This morning is a very sad and tragic moment in our country," he said.

Other leaders flocked the mortuary, where they mourned the late Governor, who has been described as an extremely focused leader, who wanted to revive the economy of Mount Kenya region and the entire country.

His Deputy Mutahi Kahiga described him as a "great boss."

He said they had a cordial working relationship but says "the County will emerge stronger." "I have known him for quite some time... there was no decision he took without consulting me."

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru said, "Governor Gakuru was a focused leader."

Her Muranga County counterpart Mwangi wa Iria said, "he was my personal friend. We had started comparing notes on how best we can lead this region together with other leaders."

"It is quite tragic since Nyeri County also lost their first Governor."

He urged leaders from the County to forge together even as new leadership assumes power.

Gakuru was pronounced dead at the Thika Level Four Hospital where he had been rushed for emergency treatment alongside his driver and Personal Assistant who is in critical condition.
