Tanzania: Zungu Heaps Praise On Lions Club

Dar es Salaam — Ilala MP Azan Zungu has lavished praise on Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Mzizima for complimenting government's efforts towards community development.

The MP said the club's contribution in social services deserved commendation after they drilled deep wells worth over Sh200 million in various schools in Dar es Salaam.

The MP was speaking at the weekend during a brief ceremony to inaugurate the Sh22m worth two deep wells at Mwanagati primary and secondary schools in Ilala District.

Zungu said he was optimistic that the club will continue to support the provision of social services, urging the school community to ensure proper maintenance of the wells.

"Our girls have special hygienic needs and water availability in schools helps them stay in schools safe and healthy," noted the MP.

He urged other organisations to support the provision of social services in schools in a bid to offer quality education as municipal councils alone could not meet the demand.

The MP took the opportunity to condemn wayward behaviour among pupils and students. He advised the girls to refrain from sexual relationships, which usually cut their education dream short.

He also urged parents and guardians to cultivate a tendency of making close follow-ups of their children academic progress.

"Free education for all does not mean that parents should now relax, instead, they should make serious follow-ups on how their children fare in schools," he said.

For his part, Mustafa Kudrat from Lions Club-Mzizima, said their club has already drilled 18 deep wells in various schools in Dar es Salaam.

"Two more deep water well projects are in the pipeline for two schools in Dar es Salaam. The two inaugurated deep wells at Mwanagati primary and secondary school cost some Sh22m. This also includes building a water dispenser," he said.

Speaking on behalf of the school, Jumanne Mafuru said the two schools are facing various challenges including lack of enough teachers, working tools, sports gear, desks for students and school fence, urging other organisations and well wishers to support the school.
