Nigeria: Commission Unveils 100 Proposed Monuments

The National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) has unveiled 100 proposed national monuments located in various parts of the country. These new set chosen by Nigerians, will be added to the 65 already identified monuments which have existed since colonial era.

At a pictorial exhibition of the monuments, which took place yesterday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, represented by Mrs Lizzy Ihezue-Iwuamadi, Deputy Director, Cultural Industries and Heritage, said, "The addition will fill in the gaps in the categories of values and typologies of Nigeria's monuments and heritage sites." On the list are the tombs of the first Nigerian Prime Minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa; the first Governor-General and President of Nigeria, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and General Murtala Mohammed.
