In a bid to salvage the fuel supply and distribution challenges being witnessed in some parts of the country due to panic buying from motorists, the group managing director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Maikanti Baru, on Tuesday cut short his trip to London.

Baru, who was billed to receive the Forbes Oil and Gas Man of the Year Award 2017 in the British capital on Tuesday, flew back to the country to attend what he described as a "matter of urgent importance."

However, a group under the aegis of PMB's Oil and Gas Progress (POGP) has commended Baru's steps as one in the right direction from a chief executive who understands the plight of Nigerians and saw the need to alleviate their sufferings as the Yuletide season approaches.

The national coordinator of the POGP, Alhaji Muhammad Abdullahi, said what Baru has done should be emulated by other Nigerians in the positions of authority saying doing so will make the citizens have more confidence in those who are saddled with responsibilities to make life more meaningful for Nigerians.

"The NNPC GMD has set a standard which others must copy. For a leader in such position to leave his award and rush back to the country speaks volume of a leader who knows that Nigerians deserve the best of life. We at PMB's Oil and Gas Progress commend Baru for the step he has taken," he said.

Meanwhile, the NNPC in a statement signed by its group managing director, public affairs division, Ndu Ughamadu, the corporation has the full commitment of all downstream subsidiary companies including petroleum marketers and industry unions to cooperate in achieving zero fuel scarcity during the Yuletide period and beyond.
