Tanzania: SAUT Student in Court Over Murder

A 26-YEAR old student at St Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT), identified as Anold Albert, was arraigned before the Karagwe District Magistrate's Court on Monday charged with the murder of a police constable.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Juma Hassan told presiding Resident Magistrate Paul Magoyo that the accused committed the offence on November 30, this year. According to the charge sheet, Albert is accused of assaulting H 9607 PC Hamis, who was on guard duty at the CRDB Bank situated in Kayanga township, Karagwe district.

PC Hamis sustained head injuries and was transported to Bugando Medical Centre (BMC), in Mwanza City where he died the following day. The accused was not asked to enter any plea because the District Magistrate's Court has no jurisdiction to hear murder cases.

Magistrate Magoyo adjourned the case until December 27 this year when the case will be mentioned again.
