South Africa: Stolen Cattle Recovered With the Help of Community

press release

Mondlo community members stood up against the stealing of live-stock in their area and report suspected thieves to the police. On Friday, 1 February 2018 the victim reported to the Mondlo police that seven of his cattle were stolen from his homestead. He further informed the police that a Toyota Hilux bakkie was seen in the area and suspected that his cattle were loaded in that vehicle. Description was given to the police who started tracing the said vehicle with the assistance of the community members. The suspicious looking vehicle was spotted in the area and when the police officers attempted to stop it, the vehicle sped off. The members gave chase and it is alleged that the occupants of the said vehicle opened fire towards the members. Their vehicle crashed and landed in a ditch, and the occupants fled the scene of foot. On closer investigation, the vehicle was found with three cattle suspected to be stolen from the victim earlier on the same day. Dangerous weapons such as bush-knives, knives and river boots were recovered from the vehicle. The recovered cattle were positively identified by the owner and returned back to him. The police are still looking for the suspects who were involved in stealing the cattle.
