Mozambique: EDM Suffers Losses From Theft and Sabotage

Maputo — The Mozambican publicly owned electricity company, EDM, suffered losses of 5.3 million meticais (about 87,000 US dollars) last year as a result of theft and sabotage of electrical equipment in the central province of Manica.

According to the Manica provincial EDM delegate, Eduardo Pinto, 14 transformer stations were sabotaged in order to extract oil. Electric cables were torn down and metallic parts removed from pylons, in order to melt the metal down and make saucepans out of them for sale.
