Africa: Trump Fires U.S. Secretary of State Tillerson After Africa Visit

Cape Town — U.S. President Donald Trump has fired U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, a day after he cut his visit to Nigeria short to return to Washington ahead of schedule to deal with "urgent work there", reporters on his Nigeria visit had been told.

Trump announced his replacement on Twitter with this message:

Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!
