Angolan Leader Concerned Over Former President's Health

Luanda — The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, expressed Wednesday his concern over the health of former President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, who is hospitalized in Barcelona.

According to President Lourenço, who was speaking at the end of a visit to the CPLP headquarters in the Portuguese capital (Lisbon), the Angolan authorities have been following the evolution of the situation very closely.

"What we can say is that the situation is worrying and, more than that, only the doctors can make a statement," he added.

He also said that he is following his state of health with great concern and, proof of this, he sent on Wednesday, from Lisbon, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, to Barcelona, in order to follow the evolution.

In this context, he also mentioned that he has been in permanent contact with his family.

The former President returned to Barcelona at the beginning of March this year to continue his medical treatment, which began in 2019.

José Eduardo dos Santos, 79 years old, came to power in September 1979, after the death of the first President of Angola and Founder of the Nation, António Agostinho Neto.

He held office for 38 years, until September 2017, when he was succeeded by the current President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

Besides being President of the Republic, he was Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and President of the MPLA, the party that has ruled the country since the proclamation of national independence on 11 November 1975.
