Angola: Elections2022 - Unita Files Criminal Complaint to Attorney General

Luanda — UNITA announced Saturday, in Luanda, that it has filed two criminal complaints to the Attorney General's Office (PGR), for alleged violation of the electoral law regarding the coming August 24 elections.

The leader of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, who was speaking in a rally in Luanda, explained that the complaints were addressed to the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MAT), without specifying the dates.

According to the party leader, UNITA considers the non-publication of the electoral registers, thirty days before the date of the elections, and the lack of auditing on the database of senior citizens by these institutions to be "serious violations of the process".

In his view, publication of the electoral roll would allow voters to identify their polling stations, while "auditing the file would make it easier to remove names of deceased citizens".

Adalberto Junior urged respect for the Constitution and the law, with a view to holding free, fair, and transparent elections.

The politician defended the need for the party's members to follow the progress of the process until voting day, having appealed to UNITA sympathisers to remain "500 metres away from the polling stations" after exercising their right to vote, so as to function as a "sort of inspection".

In July, UNITA lodged a complaint to the CNE regarding alleged irregularities in the electoral process, however the CNE rejected the allegations of the second largest political force in parliament.

At the time, the CNE justified that "if the citizens are dead they will not vote".
