Kenya: Divided by the Colours of a New Constitution
UN Integrated Regional Information Networks, 30 July 2010
Less than three years after a closely fought presidential election plunged Kenya into widespread violence and displaced thousands, the country is bracing itself for another crucial and equally divisive ballot, this time on a new constitution.

With only a few days to go, it is worrying to see how Kenyans seem divided in the name of Constitution. Dear Kenyans, i think it is worthwhile to stop and ask ourselves, what is so important? Is it the constitution or it is us? That constitution will actually have nothing important if we will not really define ourselves in a dignifying manner. I do think a constituion should actually be an expression of what a people of that country are. Hence, this constitution matter ought to be done in a manner that will unite us in one dignity as a people of a sovereign state Kenya. Let us give sincere feelings of what we feel about the constitution and not allow it to create prejudice in our minds of whatever kind: tribal, regional, racial, class, and so forth. Let us not allow what happened in 2007 to happen again. This referendum will not be the end, we will still have days a head to live together, work together, and build our country together. it will all depend on how we will take ourselves during and after the referendum. In this case also, it will be important that the electoral systems display the highest level of objectivity, sincerety and above all transparency.
Keep Kenya alive, it is our country, not just for us, but also for generations to come. Again I repeat, let us do all we can to keep kenya alive. We need each other, and only in this way shall we work well on this constitutional document, to define us as a united nation of people who live and work together.
