• Western Sahara: Western Sahara - Shafted By the UN - Again

Daily Maverick (Johannesburg), 25 April 2012

Despite South Africa's sole objection, the United Nations chose not to monitor human rights in the knowledge of gross violations in Western Sahara, which was condemned to another year of its impasse with Morocco.

It is interesting that the writer did not mention Algeria not even once and yet blamed it all on Morocco and France. Western Sahara's conflict is an Algerian made. It is the Algerian regime that hosts, arms and pays lobbyists to defend Western Sahara separation from Morocco for the last 36 years. It is Algeria that "bought" with its Petro-Dollars some Africans to accept Polisario in AU. The Sahrawis should have the whole Sahara for them, from the Atlantic Ocean to Red Sea but singling out just the Moroccan part of the Sahara will never happen. I just have to remind some Africans that don't know much about North Africa that the inhabitants of Western Sahara region are Muslims and Arabs just like the ones in the north of Morocco (this is not Sudan and yet Algeria didn't want the black Christians in South Sudan to have a country of their own). This is an Arab issue and should let alone deal with it. South Africa has more issues to deal with than putting her nose where it does not belong.

Dear allAfrica, sorry for all the bother, but there shouldn't be a space between the "%" and the following "2" in the web address "http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=nERjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=PXQNAAAAIBAJ&pg=662 %2C1682890". Thank you.

@ Obori, thank you for your comment. You might also be interested to know that the genetic make-up of Morocco -as most North Africans- is predominately Berber, where the largest recognized Berber populations exist in Morocco. Although we celebrate our Arab heritage -the language of our religion- we also celebrate the many other cultural influences we've had throughout the centuries. Unfortunately, North Africa was relatively recently subject to an aggressive and oppressive form of Arabization, known to the world as "Nasserism". Whilst this also had its effect in Morocco (especially through independent political parties), our King was actually strongly opposed to this agenda.

On the other hand, Algeria and their puppet Marxist organisation, the Polisario Front, are led by Nasserists/Arabists.

Morocco has never denied its African roots and continues to work for the interest of Africa even though it is not part of the African Union; ironically, it was Morocco who first had the idea and helped establish the original OAU. Unfortunately, as you highlighted, the oil-rich Arabists in Algiers and Tripoli brought in the Polisario Front at the expense of Morocco. Morocco rightly considered this action a betrayal.

Morocco has never asked for blind support and we consider a true friend as the one capable of highlighting our faults. We call on African states to point us in the right direction. However, the truth of the matter in this particular case is that the Sahara has always been part of our Kingdom and was taken from us by the colonialists.

The history is out there clearly written for all impartial viewers to judge. Finally, Moroccan not only feels a strong sense of betrayal from Algeria (who we supported with our blood and sweat to help achieve independence), but from the actions of South Africa who we also lent unconditional support to during their struggle against their apartheid regime. Shame on them for today conspiring against truth and justice.
