• Africa: How Mobile Media Is Transforming Africa for Good

This is Africa (London), 27 November 2012

Often has the question been asked: Who does technology serve? Earlier this year, as a member of the judging panel for the first African Open Data Bootcamp in Kenya, I came across a "Sanitation in Schools" app.

Africa is a continent not a country. In most countries in Africa due to growing development, populations are typically concentrated in urban areas versus rural. Most networks in africa operate largely prepaid subscriptions with between 70% and 80% of subscribers being prepaid and postpaid/contract plans attracting strict credit control including corporate registration, bill payment and address verification before service is provided.bills are sent largely via email to reduce carbon footprint and costs, with only customers who have specifically requested for hard copies recieving them

I'm not trying to be sarcastic or racist here but with a large population in urban areas unlike are urban areas how do the cell companies know to send bills and with 1/2/3/4/5/$ per month incomes WHAT do they charge?

are they considered a losing customer so the rest pick up the cost ATT customers eg This always made me wonder since I heard the Native Americans On Rez in southwest can get cell phone/service for a $1 plus taxes and fees

1.75 who picks up the true cost?? ratepayers Universal service fee "Here, but not any other country?
