The governments of the United States of America and Liberia yesterday signed a US$9.1 million agreement to expand "the electricity grid" of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) in Monrovia.
With a budget of approximately US $550 Million for 2012-2013, with six
months remaining in the budget year, how was this amount allocated and
spent? Who receive bulk of this budget? A US $ 9.1 Million is just a drop
in pockets of our leaders. This amount will be expanded and the people will
still not have light. Liberia is a difficult country where leaders put
their personal interests above the nation interest. The effect of
corruption is everywhere in Liberia after seven years of democratic rule.
No running water, no light, three-fourth of the country roads lie in ruin
while our leaders buy homes abroad and build mansion in Liberia. Some
Government Officials make minimum US$6,000 per month in addition to free
vehicles, gasoline, calling card, etc., while the ordinary Liberians if
lucky to be employ by government make maximum US $100.00 per month. This is
a big inequality and injustice.
