• Nigeria: 2015 - President Jonathan's Lonely Walk

    Vanguard (Lagos), 22 December 2012

The political feud between incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-President, Olusegun Obasanjo has apparently deepened. Worst still is that President Jonathan's strong supporter and kinsman, Alhaji Mojahid Dokubo- Asari may have also ditched him, saying the President may not go beyond 2015. Saturday Vanguard's JOHN BULUS analyzes the situation and its consequences.

What is happening with Jonathan now is eerily similar to what took place with Obama. Obama came in with huge expectations and within a year, he was found to be a big disappointment. Many of his backers deserted him politically and bet against him for the 2012 election. Obama became his own political force and has surrounded himself with an outside cabal which deviated from his old supporters and godfathers. With this, he is still in power today. I predict that Goodluck Jonathan will try the same thing and will remain in power past 2015. Obama and Jonathan are very similar in their public demeanor, how their campaigns were run, and their first term records. Who is to say that Jonathan can't create a cabal for himself? The problem with this is that it will lead to a massive political war which will not only distract the public, but may cause incredible hardship domestically and this will go for both Nigeria and the United States.
