Liberia's Sirleaf Reaches Out to Opponents

After being confirmed as the winner in the November 12 run-off poll boycotted by the opposition, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf promised to reach out to her opponents and reconcile the divided nation. In a nationwide address, she announced an independent inquiry into the clashes between police and opposition supporters one day before the vote. And she established a "national peace and reconciliation initiative" headed by Leymah Gbowee, the peace activist with whom the president shares the 2011Nobel Peace Prize.

The run-up to the Liberian run-off presidential vote was marred by violence.
