South Africa's Marikana Miners Freed of Murder Charges

The murder charges brought against the 270 mineworkers were withdrawn and they will be released on a warning. They would have been tried under the "common purpose" doctrine - a law last used in the apartheid era - for the murder of 34 co-workers. The miners were killed during a confrontation with police after a series of violent protests for improved working conditions and wages.
