Is Privatization of East African Ports the Answer?
Negotiations are underway to have the regional ports of Mombasa and Dar-es-Salaam placed under the management of private players, a move that is hoped will enhance operational efficiency to ports that provide access to all East African countries.

I would suggest that instead of making the port privatized - the thing to do is make Kenya ports authority and the ports aurthority in dar es salaam, part of a larger parastatal a regional authority - i am not sure how the process of making it a Ports Regional Authority would be -- but here is what i think would be its responsibilities: of course mombasa and dar ports - and safe guarding services in a partial way - so that when a rwandese container is removed from the ship - its not treated as a foreign package but part of its responsibility. EAC ports authority or what ever it will be called would be a much smoother way to go. the benefit to the kenya and tanzania is that they get to employ the personell. They can also setup other ports that are not under this authorities jurisdication and and create some competition. lamu could possibily be a better port for kenyan bound good for example -
