Mbeki Named 'African of the Year' for Efforts in Sudan
Former South African president Thabo Mbeki has been named "African of the Year' in recognition of his outstanding leadership as chair of the African Union's High Level Implementation Panel on Sudan (AUHIP). Mbeki has guided the panel's work in helping Sudan and South Sudan reach important agreements on security issues and disputes over oil.

Describing him as “the most powerful man in Africa, the first person local and international call at slightest hint of trouble” Time said that President Mbeki has set out to “drag Africa into the international spotlight and spark an ‘African Renaissance’ that will bring democracy, peace and development-Institute of South East Asian Studies.
