I could have posted this few words of sympathy to the fellow citizens of Liberia, especially fellow brothers and sisters of the Catholic Church of Liberia for the great lost that we all, especially those of us who had direct contact with the Late Archbishop Francis, have sustained. The words of our Vice President, Joseph N. Boakai, I believe speak for all of us.
Bishop Francis life meant very little to him whenever it came to working for the saving of others lives. I can give many examples but let me just mention one that involved the lives of many others including the leader of the nation at that time,Dr. Amos C. Sawyer.
When the NPFL decided to catch Interim President Sawyer and his officials at a so-call meeting in Harbel which was organized by many notable Liberians including then Methodist Bishop Kulah among others, it was the Late Archbishop Francis who went to President Sawyer and told him angrily in the President's room at the Ducor Hotel to call the trip off because if he didnk't they were going to kill him like they did with President Doe. Just after the Bishop left the room, the ECOMOG Field Commander came in and informed Dr. Sawyer that he,the Field Commander has received information that the NPFL has setup ambushes to catch Dr. Sawyer. I was already at the Ducor Hotel with my tape recorder for the journey to Harbel, even though to tell you the truth today that I told my children that morning that if they do not see me then we shall see later. President Sawyer was already prepared to take off. Bishop Francis saved us that day. He was not going to die because he was not going, yet he was concerned about us so made the President called the trip off, even though the other Bishop was on Kiss FM saying, 'when the two presidents meet today this war will be over.' You can interpret what that meant. Another thing I remember about Archbishop Francis is an over forty minutes interview I conducted with him when President Taylor was breaking down BTC and claiming that he was going to turn it into the children's village with his cousin, Martel Gibson leading the campaign against the BTC with a million dollars of the chidren's money from the Italian singer's gift to the Liberian children in Miss Gibson hands. The Late Bishop Francis suggested many other way of using BTC since Mr. Taylor was afraid of having the AFL living behind his Executive Mansion office. He was even reminded abtout the Youth Center land that the Late President Tolbert provided in Careysburg. By the way, i still have that interview with me. Any radio station what would like to play it should contact me at 267-777-3895. So fellow Liberians all that I want to say to you is to remember the evil that the Late Bishop Francis fought againt and do everything within your power never to allow that evil to come back. Bishop Francis made many mistakes just like any other humanbeing, but the good he did surpasses the bad. So we should all pray for the Good Lord to receive his Soul and his Spirit to rest in the hands of father Abraham. To the Catholic Church, may the Creator give you another likes of Michael Kpakala Francis and the may the Soul of the Great Micheal Francis rest and Perfect Peace as he awaits that Great Resurrection Day!
Faithfully, Steve Makundu.
