New Species of Human Ancestor Discovered in South Africa

Scientists have studied a collection of fossils from what may be the first species of human relative to display ritualistic burial behaviour.

Homo naledi - the new new species discovered in South Africa.

Scientists had to squeeze through a chute that narrowed to 17cm in width at one point, to access the chamber in the Dinaledi system. The discovery of Homo naledi involved two expeditions in November 2013 and March 2014.

South African scientists have announced the discovery of a new species of human relative in a remote cave chamber in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site - Homo naledi.
