South Africa: New Tax for Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has proposed a new tax on sugar-sweetened beverages, as government increases its efforts to tackle obesity. Read more »
The excise duty on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products will go up by between 6% and 8.5% respectively, while a sugar tax will be imposed on fizzy cooldrinks and other non-alcoholic beverages for the first time.
