Sirleaf Leads Ecowas Mission to Seek End to Gambia Standoff

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, current chair of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), will lead a delegation of regional leaders to Banjul on Tuesday. On Sunday there were apparently inaccurate stories saying a plane carrying the Liberian leader was refused permission to land in the Gambian capital. Yahya Jammeh, the autocrat who has ruled the tiny west African nation for 22 years, created a political standoff on Frday when he said last week's elections had to be rerun due to irregularities, He had previously conceeded defeat to Adama Barrow, who was certified as victor by the country's election commission. Barrow has appealed to Jammeh to accept the results, as have Ecowas and UN officials.
