Liberia - UN Rep 'Optimistic' As Security Council Votes Extension

Liberians alone can "build a viable nation" and overcome the legacy of war, the UN Special Representative told Liberia's Daily Observer newspaper. On December 23, the UN Securty Coun cil approved a final extension of the peacekeeping operation that has been in the country for the past decade. The number of personnel will be reduced from 1240 military personnel to a ceiling of 434 plus 310 police.

UN peacekeepers will remain in Liberia until March 2018.
