Is Criminalising Hatred the Answer to Racism in South Africa?
According to Jameelah Omar of The Conversation, the growing number of incidents of racism on social media suggest that the country needs to ensure that prejudice has consequences. The question is whether those consequences ought to be criminal sanctions.
A strong argument against the criminalising of hate speech is that it won't change people's prejudices, it will simply stop people from expressing them, writes Jameelah Omar of The Conversation (file photo).
