In what are probably the most widespread anti-government protests in South Africa since the establishment of democracy in 1994, tens of thousands took to the streets in city centres and suburban streets to protest against President Jacob Zuma's firing of his respected finance minister, causing international credit rating downgrades and a slide in the value of the currency.
