China Comes to Mozambique's Rescue as Aid Cuts Begin to Hurt

China has announced the pardoning of U.S.$36 million in debt, although the full amount owed by Mozambique has not been revealed. This comes at a time the Filipe Nyusi-led government is struggling to cope with a significant debt burden inherited from the previous government led by President Armando Guebuza. Foreign donors have suspended their contributions to the southern African country's budget in the wake of revelations that the previous government incurred massive debts without disclosing them.
