Is South Africa Facing a Child Literacy Crisis?

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has said the solution to raising literacy levels among children lies in improving work in the foundation phase. This comes after the release of the 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Studies results which ranked South Africa last among 50 countries during an evaluation of the reading skills of 9- and 10-year-olds.
