President Barack Obama, whose paternal grandmother still lives in Kenya, is America's first black president. He has been elected to a second term in office. IT consultant Jackie Chisholm, 32, says Obama's victory is a significant one for the continent. "It matters because he's African - we believe he's African apart from being an American. So we believe in him and we also believe in ourselves...Things are not perfect, but I'm so glad the Americans have given him a second chance," she says.

Acting U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec hosted guests, students and media at his residence in Nairobi for a post-election program. Godec praised the peaceful election process and urged Kenyans to follow suit in their 2013 polls. He also pledged America's financial and strategic support for the exercise.

The victory speech: Americans and Kenyans gathered around large-screen televisions to watch President Obama's victory speech from Chicago. U.S. citizen Memuna Williams voted absentee from Nairobi. "It was a fun atmosphere to watch the results come in," she says. But viewing it from outside the country still "feels distant...like you're removed from everything."

Students lined up to take part in the embassy's straw poll. Ann Mwangie, 21, a student at Kenya Polytechnic University College, says she was rooting for President Obama. "We identify with Obama - he's an African. He's a Kenyan," she says. "Everyone knows about Kenya now."

Packing up: After a hard-fought race, Governor Romney conceded the 2012 election to President Barack Obama. Obama was the first to reach the 270 electoral votes necessary to win. He picked up 303 votes to Romney's 206 - Florida's 29 electoral votes were too close to call.
