The United Nations' updated population predictions have Africa in a unique position with the potential to top other regions' population numbers around the year 2100. Rapid development on the continent coupled with declining population growth rates in Asia have Africa poised for big opportunities.

The data show Asia's population peaking around the year 2050, then beginning a subtle decline. Meanwhile, Africa's population is projected to remain at a steep incline to 2100 and likely beyond.

Much of the population growth will come from sub-Saharan Africa, according to the data. Population growth rates in sub-Saharan Africa are much steeper than those of North African nations, which remain fairly flat-lined.

The UN data were extrapolated further, showing the most population growth coming from the developing world, of which sub-Saharan Africa makes up a large portion. The world's least developed countries are another subgroup expected to see largely increased population.

Africa's population boom will mean a huge surge in the number of young people on the continent. Africa's dependency ratio – or the number of children younger than 15 years and adults older than 64 compared to the number of people outside that group - is expected to shrink to 56 percent by 2100.
