It was just 10 years ago – in 1994 – when the world stood by and watched as more than 800,000 ethnic Tutsis were systematically murdered in Rwanda by rival extremist Hutus. When the killing finally ended after 100 days – and the horrific images of what had taken place were broadcast around the globe – world leaders acknowledged it was genocide, apologized for failing to intervene, and vowed “never again.” That pledge from the international community is being put to the test today in western Sudan, where an estimated 30,000 black African Muslims have been murdered and more than 1 million have been driven from their tribal lands and forced to live in one of 129 refuge camps scattered across the western provinces of Darfur. More than 160,000 have fled across the border to Chad.
