Gambian journalist Deyda Hydara was gunned down in cold blood at the wheel of his car on the night of 16 December 2004 and there are many who see the government’s hand behind this murder. As soon as Reporters Without Borders learned of his death, it made plans to send a representative to The Gambia to help his family and to press the authorities to conduct a serious investigation. This report presents the fi ndings of that visit to Banjul and surrounding areas, as well as to the Senegalese capital of Dakar, from 21 to 27 December.
