The final peace agreement, ending Sudan’s civil war was signed on the 9th of January, 2005. This will be followed by a six-month pre-interim phase and then a six-year interim period, during which a referendum will be held to decide whether national unity should be preserved or whether Southern Sudan will opt for self-determination.
