Kenya: Economic Impact of Oil Discovery

Economists have begun breaking down the expected impact of Monday's announcement of Kenya's discovery of promising oil deposits in Turkana County. While the economy is expected to grow exponentially once commercially exploitation begins, the government will be required to exercise caution when signing revenue sharing agreements with oil companies to ensure maximum benefit for the country as well as secure jobs for the local population. And as Henry Githaiga reports, the discovery of oil will transform Kenya from an agricultural economy to a mining economy while exporters may see their margins reduced due to the expected appreciation of the shilling.
