Kenya: Odinga Downplays Mudavadi's Departure

Prime Minister Raila Odinga remains defiant that the wave of defections that have rocked the Orange Democratic Party will not dent his third shot at the presidency. A day after deputy prime minster Musalia Mudavadi quit the orange party and declared that he would contest the presidency on a United Democratic Forum party ticket, the prime minister led his party in stepping up pressure on his former deputy in ODM to also relinquish his Sabatia seat and deputy premier's position. Terming Mudavadi as a dilligent political student, Odinga nonetheless told the Sabatia legislator that he could no longer expect to enjoy the benefits accruing to him by virtue of his previous membership of Odm. Odinga spoke at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport upon arrival from the U.S.A. Francis Gachuri attended the early morning press conference and filed this report.
