The new cancer law that was assented to by President Kibaki seeks to compel the government to make cancer treatment free. Now, 82,000 people are diagnosed with cancer annually in Kenya and grapple with the soaring costs of treatment. However, Medical Services Minister Prof Anyang' Nyong'o says due to the financial constraints facing the government, Kenyans may have to contribute towards cancer treatment through the Universal Health Insurance Scheme set to be rolled out through the National Hospital Insurance Fund, NHIF.
