Kenyan Teachers Vow to Strike

The country's public education system is likely to grind to a halt today, after teachers maintained that they were embarking on their planned strike, even as the government kept its week-long silence over the matter. The umbrella teachers union - KNUT says it has resolved to keep away teachers from classes, after the government refused to dialogue on the demands for the implementation of a salary increment agreement, signed back in 1997. The Salaries and Remuneration Commission has meanwhile asked labour unions to exhaust all avenues, before resorting to industrial action.
