There was shock and disbelief after security personnel deployed in Tana River County discovered a fresh mass grave in Ozi village.

Security personell drawn from the General Service Unit, Administration Police and Regular Police discovered the mass grave during a disarmament exercise in the area.

The officers are now keeping vigil at the site as they await a court order to exhume the bodies.

If granted, the bodies will be exhumed and examined by a Government pathologist.

The discovery was made even as 20 suspects arrested yesterday in connection with the Tana River clashes were expected to be arraigned in court this afternoon.

The suspects were arrested after an incident where 20 houses were torched Monday morning.

Among the suspects are two serving chiefs.

More than 1,800 GSU and other police formations have been deployed in the area in a bid to restore peace in Tana delta.

More than 120 people were killed in the recent flare-up pitting the local communities Pokomo and Orma.

Internal Security PS Mutea Iringo says the ongoing operation has so far recovered a host of security paraphernalia, one mark 4 gun, several military boots, 17 spears and 32 machetes.

The suspects will be arraigned before a Kilifi court.
