Fisheries Minister Amason Kingi's bodyguard and three other people died after a campaign rally turned violent when a group of youths disrupted it and attacked the Minister's entourage. The attackers are said to have been chanting slogans warning that there will be no elections at the coast, a demand that has been associated with the Mombasa Republican Council.
