Before the 1950s, music in Uganda was purely for traditional purposes such as celebrating weddings, praising the gods, sports and hunting.

Towards the end of the 19th century when Christian missionaries embarked on teaching Christianity and celebrating holy mass, music found another role. Church music became synonymous with Christian teaching and men like Polycarp Kakooza emerged as products of the strongly rooted missionary work. He went on to compose the Buganda national anthem that became one of the first songs to be recorded professionally. That was in 1939.
