The Department of Political Affairs plays a leading role in the work of the United Nations to help nations hold credible elections. In many cases, these elections are a defining moment in a country's transition to democracy, as in Libya in 2012. In the last twenty years, the United Nations has assisted more than 100 of the UN member states, more than half of its membership, with electoral support.
