In what appears to be yet another spirited fight, the Kenya National Union of Teachers has issued a 28-day notice, demanding that the government pay pensions to approximately 52,000 teachers who retired between 1997 and 2005 but are yet to receive their dues.

The government was expected to release 33 billion shillings in pension and gratuity arrears after Parliament passed the resolution intended to benefit retired teachers in June this year. The retired teachers are also demanding the accrued pension in accordance with a high court ruling. The ultimatum comes barely a month after teachers made good their threat to go on a month-long strike over salary grievances. Sally Mbilu reports.
