France's defence minister has said a hostage held in Somalia is believed to have been killed during a botched rescue attempt by French forces.

But al-Shabab fighters, who kidnapped the intelligence agent in 2009, denied he has been killed.

The minister said one French commando was also killed and another is missing.

Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from Paris.
