South Africa's National Police MinisterRefuses to Comment About Civil Suit Against Police

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has refused to comment on the planned civil suit against his Ministry by the family of the late taxi driver, Mido Macia.

The Mozambican national died in police custody more than two weeks ago. It is alleged that Macia was tied to a police van and dragged on the street. He later died from the injuries he sustained.

Mthethwa has met with Macia's family where he expressed his condolences saying he regrets the incident.
Mthethwa says the aim of today's visit was not to discuss the civil suit but to show "ubuntu" at this difficult time for the family.

Macia's brother, Zano Mthimkhulu, and his family have welcomed the visit as it shows that government is also appalled by this incident. Mthethwa went on to visit the taxi rank from where Macia was dragged by a police van. He will also meet police management at the Daveyton Station.
